Jonjon, 6 years old, lives with his family in a small makeshift house at the side of a fly over road. Their house is a virtual junkshop, built from salvaged parts that his parents have scavenged along the busy streets of Malabon. Its walls are made
up of dilapidated plywood, floors from used tarpaulin. There’s a soiled mattress for a bed, an old distorted TV, and a stripped down and screeching electric fan. Jonjon’s parents get less than P150 from scavenging all day long.
This is the life of survival for Jonjon and his family -- always on the lookout for valuable junk --piecing together their lives as they pick up the next great find. Children like Jonjon need not to live on scraps. Children like Jonjon should be allowed to enjoy life as kids – to be given the time to learn, play and experience life’s joy.
Struggling with a speech defect, Jonjon is unfazed and determined to pursue a life full of wonder and hope. Jonjon is about to start as a first grader and he looks forward to a world of many firsts – scribbling his name with a pencil, reading stories, and being with new classmates. Surely Jonjon’s street-smarts would only take him as far. Having a real education would better prepare him for a lifetime of opportunities. Jonjon is now on his way to fulfilling his dreams of going to school and becoming a soldier someday.
